Alex Boyd is a junior at Western Michigan University. He started his collegiate career in North Carolina State University’s Paper and Chemical Engineering Program before transferring to WMU’s Paper and Chemical Engineering Program in the Spring of 2021 in a return to his hometown of Kalamazoo, MI. To date, he has completed a 16-month internship with WestRock Battle Creek as a Process Engineer and a part-time Pipeshop/E&I Apprentice; a 4-month Process Engineering co-op with New Indy Containerboard in Catawba, SC; and a 3-month internship with Industrial TurnAround Corporation, an engineering firm in Raleigh, NC. He will cap that off with an internship with Ursa Major Technologies, an aerospace propulsion system manufacturer, as a Manufacturing Controls Engineer in their newly formed Controls Department. He is also running for President of TAPPI’s Student Chapter Board, and is currently developing a two-day, student-led manufacturing training program for industry salespersons without any paper engineering background. An avid disc golfer, he has also been active in reviving WMU’s Baja SAE team, designing, engineering, fabricating, and competing a 4x4 vehicle in off-road racing events against other colleges across the country.
